Once a beacon of hope, California's fortune has dropped like a rock. Is this a warning for the rest of the nation?
BusinessWeek takes an in-depth look at the variety of problems facing California: "Festering long-term problems that had been covered over by the economic boom are suddenly being laid bare. The state's once-cherished public education system has been in decline for years. Meanwhile, inadequate water supplies, overcrowded roads, and a shortage of affordable housing threaten to choke off growth. California's government, seen by much of the country as too populist and too avant-garde, seems ineffective in dealing with problems like the energy crisis."
