Squatters to Gain Legal Land Rights in the Amazon
28 June 2009 - 7:00am
The Brazilian government has just approved a measure that would grants legal land rights to squatters in the Amazon.
Some worry the new law will enable further deforestation of the rainforest.
"The law – known as 'provisional measure 458' – is one of the most controversial environmental decisions of Lula's two terms in office, with the president coming under intense pressure from both environmental groups and the country's powerful agricultural lobby."
