Most Unaffordable Housing, Most Livable Cities?

22 June 2009 - 8:00am

The Economist magazine has published it's list of the most livable cities in the world. But quite a few of these cities have the most unaffordable housing, complains Owen McShane.

McShane believes the list is biased towards a wealthy cultural elite, adn doesn't take into consideration the most important factors when choosing a place to live- namely, the cost of housing.

"Of course some will no doubt hail such surveys because they emphasize such things as physical beauty or cultural offerings. Yet they have precious little to do with what matters most, notably affordability of decent housing. For most migrants to these cities, the prospects of upward mobility – something not discussed or even considered – are probably less optimal than in places like Houston, Atlanta, and even New York."
