In this opinion article, Michael Lewyn argues that government sabotages the public transit systems it subsidizes.
The conventional wisdom among non-environmentalists is that public transit is a failure because government has subsidized transit for decades, yet the majority of Americans drive. In fact, government at all levels has inadvertently sabotaged non-automotive transportation not only by funding the competition, but also by encouraging Americans to move to suburbs with little transit service and by zoning those suburbs to make public transit infeasible.
