The Politics Of Land-Use
24 April 2001 - 6:00am
Ron Dzwonkowski observes that issues such as sprawl, open space, and zoning affect everybody but few politicians take them on as campaign issues.
"Land-use planning. Now there's a subject to stir the soul of the body politic. Try sailing into office on that ship." U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore. points out that "[T]hey're driving to a health club to ride a stationary bike for an hour" -- in air conditioning." He goes on to say that "retirees don't need castles with expansive lawns. Many of them would return, he believes, to the kinds of neighborhoods where they grew up, places built to accommodate walking, biking and a sense of community. If such places existed."
