Zoning Keeping WalMart From Eager Community
Residents of Charlotte, NC are pushing the State to change a zoning rule to allow a WalMart to go in on Independence Blvd. Land around the boulevard is being held for a possible freeway, but residents claim the area is stagnating from the strictures.
"Worried that inaction could endanger a Wal-Mart-led revitalization of the corridor, the City Council is working quickly to fix the problem.
'I don't want to see this evaporate,' said Councilwoman Nancy Carter at a recent economic development meeting.
Councilman John Lassiter, head of the council's economic development committee, has urged city staff to come up with a solution.
'I plan to continue to press on this especially since they are jeopardizing the WalMart project,' he wrote in an e-mail to a constituent.
The council plans to hold a public hearing on the matter April 27."
