NASA Maps Salt Lake's Hot Spots

18 April 2001 - 12:00pm

NASA technology now streaking toward Mars to unlock secrets about the Red Planet helped map a not-so-mysterious spot: Salt Lake City.

The Mars-bound scanning equipment, designed to examine mineral and chemical composition in soil, pinpointed heat islands. A heat map of the region was presented Monday morning at the Utah Division of Natural Resources. Heat islands are layers of hot air that sit above certain urban locations, making them warmer than the surrounding area. Asphalt parking lots and dark roofs are among the main culprits for heating parts of the urban environment.
