Three Things the Mayor Can Do to Fix L.A.

<em>Los Angeles Times</em> architecture critic Christopher Hawthorne offers three pieces of advice to recently re-elected L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for improving his city -- and his urban planning credibility.

"For all his talk of supporting green development and 'elegant density,' the mayor has often pandered to some very outdated and automobile-centric notions about growth and mobility in this city."

Hawthorne's three item to-do list for L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa:

1. Show real leadership on mass transit.

2. Expand the powers of the Urban Design Studio.

3. Produce a plan for dealing with abandoned and vacant property.

4. Change the parking policies. In Los Angeles, people have no right to housing, but cars have the right to a free space everywhere they go. Don Shoup's home town should lead the nation in enlightened parking policy! As a benefit, parking can pay for some transit.
