There are over 500 community networks in the U.S., typically in communities under 50,000 people.
"From Seattle to Tallahassee, community networks have sprung up across the country. These networks typically are nonprofit organizations formed for the purpose of providing local-level Internet access, technology training and outreach and a point of entry for community-related content and conversation on the Web."
