Assistant Professor - Sustainable Community Planning

The Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in community planning with emphasis on participatory planning and design processes, and the theories, policies, and practices that inform and guide the physical planning and design of communities. The successful candidate will have research and teaching focused on the role and practice of sustainable planning and design at the community scale. The candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program with external funding and to build departmental and inter-departmental interdisciplinary collaboration. Possible research areas include but are not limited to compact cities, smart growth, global planning issues, land use change, adaptive responses to climate change, environmental and procedural justice, or community empowerment, preferably viewed through a lens of sustainability. The applicant’s experience should demonstrate the ability to work across disciplinary lines in the social and natural sciences and the potential to attract external funding. Teaching responsibilities include graduate courses for planning and landscape architecture students, courses in the undergraduate environmental design program--urban planning concentration, as well as a course related to the candidate’s area of specialty. We place special emphases on faculty-student interaction and cooperation among faculty. We share a fundamental commitment to teach and attract a diverse student body.
A doctoral degree in Planning or related field is required. Professional experience in community design, planning and/or AICP certification is desirable. Previous teaching experience at a university level and a record of scholarly publications is desirable.
