Air quality, before and after

One of the criticisms of removing an urban freeway is that it will be replaced with streets where there will be stop and go traffic and air quality will be even worse as a result. Is anyone aware of comparisons of air quality readings prior to and following removal of a major urban freeway? I suppose one factor would be the percentage of traffic diverted from the freeway to alternative routes.
