Pedal Power + Electricity = Great Commute?

The Wall St. Journal's David Patton tries a new hybrid-electric bicycle to see if it makes sense as a commute vehicle.
"High gas prices have sent consumers scrambling to smaller cars, mass transit and even scooters. Another alternative: electric bikes.
But can a hybrid-electric bicycle really take the place of a car? To find out, I tested an Urban XU450 made by OHM Cycles Ltd. It combines a commuter-style aluminum bike with a lithium-ion battery and a small electric motor.
Riders aren't totally off the hook from labor -- they still have to pedal -- but the battery and electric motor lend a hand when covering long distances and steep hills."
