Director of Community Development
Starting salary Commensurate with Experience and Qualifications
Minimum: $84,187 Annually
Position will remain open until filled.
The Director of Community Development provides management and oversight of the Division of Community Development. Ensures City policies related to growth and development are administered in a customer-oriented manner. Provides coaching and mentoring to Division employees and ensures they have the necessary knowledge skills and abilities to perform their jobs. Additional duties and responsibilities include:
• Coordinates and supports the efforts of the Division’s Department Managers in implementing the assigned responsibilities of the Planning Department, Inspection Services Department, and the Housing and Neighborhood Development Department.
• Ensures that the Community Development Division is sensitive and responsive to the needs and desires of a wide variety of local interest groups, among which are: elected and appointed City officials; development officials; community leaders; neighborhood and citizen groups; Division and other City staff; outside agencies and organizations; and the general public. Continuously evaluate Division processes and make appropriate changes in order to provide consistent quality service to all constituents.
• Works in cooperation with the City’s Leadership Team in formulating City policy recommendations and carrying out the City’s adopted policies related to Community Development.
• Provides guidance and support to the City Council, Planning and Zoning commission, Zoning Board of Adjustment, Building Standards Commission, and the Historic and Architectural Review Commission concerning planning and development issues.
• Works with the City’s Management Team on the review and approval of significant and/or highly sensitive development projects of importance to the community.
Education and Experience:
• Masters degree from an accredited college or university in Planning or a related field.
• Eight to ten years of planning experience including at least three years of supervisory experience.
• Membership in the American Institute of Certified Planners preferred.
• The City is open to candidates in communities from all geographic areas that are culturally, ethnically and economically diverse, though some knowledge of Texas would be a plus. Ideally, the selected candidate will have experience in a similar, fast growing community.
Knowledge and Skills:
The candidate should possess a background in Planning and Development with knowledge of and skills in:
• Growth management best practices;
• Managing municipal finances;
• Setting and achieving goals;
• Word processing and spreadsheet software;
• Representing the City with the media;
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
• Dealing with difficult personnel issues; and
• Handling intergovernmental relations.
