Free Buses For Seattle?
27 February 2001 - 8:00am
A former transit official advocates abandoning light rail in favor of free buses.
"Chuck Collins thinks we should drop expensive light rail in favor of free buses...More than a billion bucks over budget and three years behind schedule, the light-rail project has sparked fears that Sound Transit has gotten us on the wrong transportation track.Dump light rail and replace it with free buses and van pools, Collins says, and we can lure many times more people out of their cars and move them all around the county, not just along one narrow rail route. And we can do it for the same annual operating costs as light rail even without light rail's half-billion dollars in federal money or the latest round of cost increases."
