Fed Approves Underwater Pipeline

A pipeline that would carry natural gas under the Gulf of Mexico from Alabama to the Tampa Bay area has won initial approval from a federal panel.

"The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission gave approval Wednesday to the 750-mile long Gulfstream Natural Gas Pipeline. The pipeline still needs approval from several state and federal agencies before the $1.6 billion construction project can begin. The commission said the project would cause "limited adverse environmental impacts." Environmentalists and officials from some other agencies, however, have questioned whether the pipeline is environmentally sound."
