Embarking On A Light Rail Project
The city of Charlotte is preparing to break ground on its first light rail line next month after years of study and planning.
"After years of dreaming and stacks of studies, preliminary construction starts in March on Charlotte's light-rail system. That's when crews break ground for the Stonewall Street bridge so that a $331 million light-rail line can enter uptown from south Charlotte, a route it will share with the historic Charlotte trolley. "This is such an important step," Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory said. "Before this was just a dream. Now the future's here." But major decisions must be made by summer - where stations will be built, what they'll look like and how big parking lots will be - and the public is being asked to get involved in the 11-mile uptown-to-Pineville leg. The first of 10 public meetings is Tuesday night."
