Challenges of historic preservation in the Kansas City area.
"Development and preservation have a varied relationship in the [Kansas City] metropolitan area. Sometimes the two go hand in hand. Other times, new development butts with historic sites, creating controversy...The national register is an honorary listing of historic sites...[b]ut locally designated properties is where the long-term protection comes from."
