California's Power Plant Zoning Dilemma

Amid California's power crisis, the battle over the new Metcalf Energy Center heats up.
In a strongly worded letter to the California Energy Commission(CEC), Senate President Pro Tem JohnBurton, D-San Francisco, Senator Jim Brulte, R-Rancho Cucamonga,Assembly Speaker Robert Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, and Assembly MinorityLeader Bill Campbell, R-Villa Park, asked the commission to override SanJose's opposition to the Calpine Corp.'s proposed Metcalf Energy Center.The San Jose City Council in November refused to rezone land in CoyoteValley for the proposed power plant, and Mayor Ron Gonzales hassupported the decision despite pressure from the capitol.
