The Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center (“GMDC”), Riverkeeper and the Newtown Creek Alliance seek a full-time brownfields planning director to oversee and implement planning and redevelopment work along the Brooklyn and Queens sides of Newtown Creek. The position is funded by a major two-year Brownfield Opportunities Area (“BOA”) grant from the New York State Department of State and Department of Environmental Conservation.

BOA funds will be used to assess redevelopment opportunities for contaminated sites along and near the Creek, emphasizing high-performance, environmentally sustainable industrial uses, parks and wetlands creation, and improved infrastructure. The study will examine the watershed as a whole in an effort to improve the environmental condition of both the land and water.

The Director will be responsible for: organizing a diverse group of local constituents, including businesses, residents and developers; leading a steering committee to develop a scope for the study and guide the project; overseeing planning, environmental, economic and design consultants; working closely with State and City agencies; and contract administration pertinent to the BOA project.

In addition to these activities, the Director will assist in the organizational development and leadership of the Newtown Creek Alliance, an environmental and community advocacy group started in 2002. Responsibilities will include organizing bi-monthly meetings, conducting fundraising, and constituent outreach. The Director will also provide assistance for other Newtown Creek Alliance projects.

The Director will be employed by GMDC in its headquarters in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. GMDC is the fiscal sponsor of the BOA grant.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (preferably in Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, public administration, economics, or a related field); master’s or other advanced degree preferred; 5 years work experience in one or more of the following areas: environmental planning, real estate development, landscape architecture, economic/community development, or law. Strong writing and public presentation, ability to lead meetings.

The position involves working in partnership with a variety of officials and staff of local governments, State agencies, multiple community boards, and non-governmental organizations. The position will also require familiarity with government (city, state, federal) funding programs, public procurement processes, and regulatory involvement in land use and environmental revitalization. Significant experience in community organizing is essential. Applicants must be able to maintain a flexible schedule, be able to work some evenings and weekends in the neighborhoods surrounding Newtown Creek.
