Future challenges facing the City include redesign of the waterfront to accommodate an influx of new visitors, and redevelopment of metro stations, shopping centers, brownfields and obsolete industrial areas into mixed-use communities with high quality amenities and urban design.
Duties: This position requires independent professional judgment to assist the Director in planning, directing and managing the Planning Department’s community planning and geographic information systems programs. The position will lead and coordinate strategic and long-range planning efforts within the Department and with other agencies; initiate and coordinate city-wide plans that affect land-use; supervise and participate in planning, developing and implementing planning programs and processes; integrate GIS with planning activities; investigate, propose and oversee GIS applications for other departments; examine and propose ways to use GIS to improve planning and business processes; and communicate with the public and the press on related projects.
Minimum Requirements: At least five years of experience in the field of city planning at the level of Urban Planner III, including some supervisory or project leader experience and considerable experience writing, analyzing and administering zoning ordinances; and completion of college level courses in urban planning, public administration, urban economics, landscape architecture or a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications: A master’s degree in planning or a related field; three years of experience at a Principal Planner or Division Chief level; at least two years of experience working in neighborhood or comprehensive planning processes in a local government; strong analytical, written and oral communications skills; extensive project management and staff management experience; superior public presentation skills; and economic development experience.
