California state study finds 39,000 abandoned mines throughout the state. These mines, dating back to the 19th century, are safety hazards and can contaminate air and water.

"The danger of abandoned mines is becoming more evident as the population grows in high-density abandoned mine areas such as the Sierra Nevada foothills...Hazards can include old explosives, drums of chemicals, poisonous gases and runoff contaminated with chemicals such as mercury, arsenic, asbestos and chromium.
