5 minute walking time/ quarter mile distance

I'm looking for a reputable source (or multiple) on the issue of a 5 minute walk aka a quarter of a mile/400m being the breaking point between people walking or driving. It always seems to be stated as fact. Does anyone have any suggestions? What is the origin of this number?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

These interconnections ratify for us the sense that markets are as strong as confidence is present and confidence is as justified as patterns are dependable. These are what might be called our community moorings: anchored, tangible patterns.

5-10 minute walking time
Check out Anne Vernez-Moudon's work on this. She had a doc student who did extensive work on this model including route choice and tortuosity (can't remember her name this morning).
The issue includes what is along the route, having multiple route options, and whether it is 'destination' walking or 'leisure' walking making the distance.
