Head and Professor, Department of Conservation Social Sciences

The Department of Conservation Social Sciences (CSS) invites applications for the position of Department Head. Applications will be accepted up to March 28, 2008, or until suitable candidates have been identified.

Position:
This is a tenure-track, full-time, twelve-month appointment on the Moscow campus of the University of Idaho. We are seeking candidates with excellent scholarly credentials to provide vision, leadership and expert administration for a dynamic academic department in the College of Natural Resources.

Responsibilities:
The department head is the principal administrative and academic officer of the department and provides leadership and administration for the teaching, research, extension and service functions of the department. The department head reports directly to the dean of the College of Natural Resources. The department head will lead a diverse group of faculty committed to the missions of the department, college and university, and a dynamic, nationally recognized program.

Responsibilities include: a) promoting quality graduate and undergraduate academic programs and advising; b) leading strategic planning and strategic budgeting; c) facilitating a collegial atmosphere that accommodates and advances all forms of diversity and equity; d) implementing strategic enrollment management, student recruitment and retention and management of scholarship programs; e) administrative leadership and management for departmental affairs, including academic, personnel, financial and budget, and physical resources; f) faculty mentoring and performance management; g) fostering strong ties to other college and university units, natural resource and granting agencies, professional societies, citizen groups, and the general
public; h) procurement of state and federal funds, grants and private funds in support of departmental programs; and j) conducting his/her own teaching, research, and outreach program in a field appropriate to the departmental mission.

Minimum Qualifications Required to be a Candidate for the Position:
• An earned doctorate or other terminal degree in a relevant field of natural resources,
environmental, social or geographical sciences,
• A background in research, teaching and/or outreach that has an emphasis on the human dimensions of natural resource policy, planning and/or management
• An academic record of achievement to merit appointment as a Professor or Associate
Professor, with tenure,
• Demonstrated experience in leadership and management
• Demonstrated communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and stakeholders,

Academic Setting. The CSS department is one of five in the College of Natural Resources at the University of Idaho.
