15 January 2001 - 1:00pm
How much new housing does Southern California need? State and local officials continue to argue.
State and local officials have not been able to agree over how much new housing Southern California needs over the next five years - a dispute that could cost some cities their housing funds. The state Department of Housing and Community Development has determinedthe region needs 503,000 new units by 2005. The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), however, says the state's projections are inflated and has asked that the number be reduced to nearly 438,000 units."
