Prince Charles Says Skyscrapers Ruin Historic Cities
A new speech by the Prince of Wales this week warns of a "rash" of "carbuncles" destroying tourism assets.
"Prince Charles, no stranger to controversy when it comes to architecture, this week delivered a new speech criticizing British architects and developers for continually building towers that threatened World Heritage listed sites such as the Tower of London and Edinburgh Old Town. The Prince called instead for a more sustainable way of building - such as that exemplified in his own Poundbury development - that complemented existing buildings and used more durable materials and harmonious designs. The speech follows UNESCO concerns at new building around historic monuments and the INTBAU Venice Declaration of 2006, that called for a new interpretation of the ICOMOS Venice Charter that would better respect the settings of heritage buildings."
