New EPA Sewer Rules Worry Cities

10 January 2001 - 2:00pm

Officials in some cities are concerned about new rules proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency -- tough standards could force cities to reduce sewer leaks by rebuilding or improving sewers.

The proposed rules "would toughen standards for 19,000 cities or sewer districts nationwide...[and] could mean more-frequent cleaning and maintenance or, in some cases, rebuilding of deteriorated pipelines to cut the number of sewer leaks that foul creeks and close beaches. The proposed rules would essentially require small cities and sewer districts to obtain federal permits, bringing consistent standards."
