I am interesting in entering the urban planning profession.

Hi -

I've never posted anything on Planetizen before. To share with you, my name is Sergio. I graduated college in 2002 and since then I have grown a great fondness, in fact, a passion for urban planning. Typically I read books or articles dealing with planning issues, from transportation debates to land-use to urban renewal to a whole host of other matters surrounding the field. Anyhow, the truth is, I know nothing about the profession. I'm thinking about getting more involved in planning. Though I enjoy what I do now (teacher), I think I have a much greater passion for this stuff.

A few general questions I have concerning the profession are:

So what is it like being a planner? A typical day?

Is it necessary to get a planning degree?

Are their internships or fellowships where someone could learn about planning without going out to get a degree?

There are clearly many more questions, but if someone (or somebodies) would be willing to take some time and help out a young guy who is really interested in this field, I would really appreciate it.

I can also be reached at my email at sespinosa@gmail.com.

Much thanks -
Sergio

The following site may answer some of your questions:

Like you, I have no formal education in planning, but have developed an interest in the topic / profession recently.

Though the site above may point you to some answers, it would still be helpful if some planners posted their "real life" experiences.

This is in fact the kind of self-sufficient, self-sustaining 'village' community that Mahatma Gandhi -- the Father of the Nation -- dreamt of and wrote about in his books on India’s path to development.
