Hi, I'm Looking to get started on researching projects/funding streams for smart growth urban design projects on the West Coast, particularly Los Angeles, San Fran, Portland. It would be for my Masters thesis project where we are required to locate funding and develop a project plan. Thank you!

For the past half century we have been building communities for the wrong reasons. We built them to sell cars. This created all sorts of problems.

Smart Growth Urban Design Projects
Tough assignment. Though not one of the cities you mentioned, you should see San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) website for details on their Pilot Smart Growth Incentive Program http://www.sandag.org/index.asp?projectid=264&fuseaction=projects.detail
Brief description of program from website:
This innovative pilot program is based on the SANDAG Regional Comprehensive Plan (RCP) — using funding incentives to encourage coordinated regional planning to bring transit service, housing, and employment together in smart growth development. There was a $2 million cap per project. A longer-term, smart growth incentive program will be funded through the local TransNet half-cent sales tax program. It will provide $6 million in FY 2009 and grow over time as sales tax revenues increase.
