Experts Face Off Over Bullet Train

6 January 2001 - 7:00am

Transportation advocates and critics debate the benefits and costs of a high-speed rail system in the state.

"Depending on whom you believe, the bullet train project will either derail Florida's budget or move the state into the 21st Century. Jolene Molitoris, a former Federal Railroad Administration director, said the high-speed rail system will allow a rapidly expanding Florida to maintain its mobility. But the voter-approved project could prove a disastrous mistake for the state, said Tom Sander, an editorial writer for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Molitoris and Sander faced off to debate the merits and problems arising out of a state constitutional amendment approved in November. A majority of voters statewide -- 53 percent -- agreed that the state should move ahead with plans to develop a high-speed bullet train linking the five largest urban areas."
