Questions About Urban Development

Hello, I'm currently an enlisted military service member in the United States of America. I've nearly finished my enlistment and have been stationed at multiple areas of the US over a number of years. Needless to say American military post don't always preside on the most well planed areas of the country, hence my interest in Urban Development. I've been reading this post for quite some time, and I can tell you that I sympothize with recent graduate in Urban Development with the desire to change the world. Unfortunately for them they have never had the pleasure of surviving in the military, and not understanding what its like to do as your told. My question is this, I'm extremely interested in pursuing a career in city planning after I'm out of the military, but what kind of person does it take to be successful?
