Urban planning/development consultants

I am currently a senior economics and geography major. I am interested in a career in planning but I am turned off by the low salaries of government planners (especially when you consider debt from some of the MUP programs at private universities). How rare is it for entry level job seekers (with an MUP) to enter straight into the private sector, either with development companies or planning consultants?

I argue that the vocabulary of planning and the concepts necessary to participate in local government and planning issues need to be taught to students in K-12.
