Report Calls For 'Unbalanced' Trasnportation Planning

5 October 2007 - 8:00am

A recent report calling for less emphasis to be placed on cars than on other forms of transport has sparked a lively debate in Toronto.

"It's time for Toronto to give less priority to cars and more to other modes of transport, a senior Toronto official bluntly told the city's works committee yesterday."

"'Maybe a balance is no longer appropriate,' said John Mende, Toronto's director of transportation management."

"Mende was answering questions on a report that urges a string of proposed changes to city streets, including reopening the contentious issue of road tolls."

"The report also contains dozens of small-scale proposals, such as giving pedestrians more time to cross streets with traffic lights, that could be done cheaply and easily."
