Orlando's New Toll System Not Up To Speed
16 December 2000 - 9:00am
Thousands of new windshield-mounted E-Pass units are malfunctioning, complicating the debut of a new toll-taking system.
"About 5 percent or 6 percent of the electronic gizmos arent being recognized at ramp toll plazas, according to the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority. That amounts to about 12,000 units. The transponders, distributed over the last few months, arent communicating with the electronic "brains" at ramp toll plazas on the expressways system. As a result, it looks as if drivers are zipping through the plazas without paying. The units are supposed to send a signal to the plaza hardware and automatically deduct the proper amount of money from a prepaid account."

Its very unsuitability for an urban center justifies its current usage as a suburban or ex-urban pattern.
