School District Developing Housing Subdivision
Trying to make the most of a real estate deal gone bad, a school district in North Carolina is building a new 88 home subdivision next to a new school.
"For sale soon: ready-to-build, 88-lot subdivision in the booming Ballantyne area, where homes will ring a brand-new elementary school.
The developer? Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
When talk turns to coping with growth, some say private developers should help build schools.
But a school district getting into subdivision development is unheard of, say a state school construction official and a spokesman for the construction industry.
CMS is building roads, clearing lots and installing utility lines for a subdivision it will put up for sale this summer or fall. The buyer will build houses surrounding an elementary school opening in August 2008."
