20,000 New Parking Spaces For Manhattan?

As part of the failed proposal to bring an NFL stadium to Manhattan, the city is moving forward with plans to build 20,000 new parking spaces in the Hudson Yards area.

"The Bloomberg and Spitzer administrations are working together to hold on to a rezoning provision that would dramatically increase required parking inventory for new development in the Hudson Yards area on the far West Side. The parking plan is a holdover from the failed Jets stadium deal -- and it's illegal, according to the Hell's Kitchen Neighborhood Association (HKNA) and others who have filed suit against Mayor Bloomberg, City Planning Director Amanda Burden, the MTA and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

The suit alleges that the parking requirements, adopted in 2005, are in violation of a 1982 agreement to keep the city in compliance with the Clean Air Act. Further, plaintiffs question the validity of the city's environmental impact statement regarding planned development for the area."

More Cars?

Just what Manhattan needs is more cars. They should be looking into banning, or at least severely restricting private vehicles from coming onto the island. Not encouraging more by giving them a place to park.

Induced?

What about more parking implies "more cars?" No. Stop and consider. If autos can be quickly sequestered they won't be hunting for parking will they?

More = More.

Who'll contact Shoup and let him know his work has been found lacking?

Best,

D

Shoup has been...

Shoup has been shot down so many times on this issue another bullet won't make any difference. The idea that more parking spaces increase CONGESTION is a settled issue. And it was CONGESTION that was at issue.

Smoking gun lacking.

Thanks for those settled examples of how Shoup's work is incorrect, Robt. It will take me some time to read thru them and their new logic structures before I get back to you.

Best,

D
