A planner's perspective on the wisdom of infill development can change when the lot next door is under construction.

"It's a dark day when an urban planner must admit to being a NIMBY."

"There is development in my backyard. Literally. Only 10 feet from my property line, 12 houses are being constructed on a small, midtown lot."

"Don't get me wrong. I'm a great proponent of infill development in Tucson's core."

The decision to abandon a property is a symptom of the loss of confidence. And while abandonment certainly affects confidence among surrounding homeowners, the most important question to answer is not "how do we deal with abandoned properties?" but "what is the most cost-effective way to restore market confidence, and how do abandoned properties fit into that picture?"
