English PM-Hopeful Proposes Green Housing Plan
15 May 2007 - 5:00am
The man many expect to become the new English Prime Minister has proposed a plan to create 100,000 houses in five carbon-neutral "eco-towns" to help fight back against the country's housing crunch in a sustainable way.
"Labor party Chancellor Gordon Brown, campaigning to succeed Tony Blair, said he wanted the 100,000 homes in 'carbon neutral' communities to be built on old industrial sites."
"The proposed five 'eco towns' could each contain up to 20,000 homes and showed 'imagination' in combining the need for homes with helping the environment."
"Councils will be invited to bid to host the other settlements which Mr Brown said would have bus routes, cycle lanes and schools designed in a way to make them carbon neutral communities overall."

“
For the past half century we have been building communities for the wrong reasons. We built them to sell cars. This created all sorts of problems.
