Little Saigon Threatened By Retail Chains
23 April 2007 - 7:00am
Seattle residents are protesting a 600,000 square foot retail development set to move into the city's historic Little Saigon neighborhood. They fear that the character of the neighborhood will be erased by the major chain retailers on tap to move in.
"A multiethnic, multigenerational crowd of more than 400 protesters Saturday marched to the site of the proposed 10-acre development."
"Many have worries about traffic congestion and the loss of an 'authentic' neighborhood where people still shop for fresh vegetables from streetside stands."
"Developers have pledged that more than one-third of the apartments would be affordable, and they've offered small-business rent subsidies."
