Selling Fuel Cells
Oil companies and the South Coast Air QualityManagement District will join together to formthe California Fuel Cell Partnership in efforts to make fuel cells practical.
With the California Air Resources Board http://www.arb.ca.gov/homepage.htm ) mandate for millions ofzero-emission vehicles on California roads by 2003, auto manufacturers,fuel-cell makers, oil companies and the South Coast Air QualityManagement District ( http://www.aqmd.gov/ ) will join together to formthe California Fuel Cell Partnership http://www.fuelcellpartnership.org/ ) in efforts to make fuel cellspractical as an automobile power source. Fuel cells, which carmanufacturers agree could represent the best clean energy source for thefuture, use hydrogen and oxygen to make electricity and have been aroundin their most basic form for almost 100 years; however, the size andhigh cost of the technology has hindered its advancement. While there iscurrently not enough infrastructure to deliver hydrogen to passengercars for a commercially viable vehicle, manufacturers expect to offerpartially subsidized fleets in as little as five years.
