How to Reach the Alumni

14 March 2007 - 8:27am

Dear Planners, Architects, and urban enthusiasts,
Before making my decision to a masters program, I wanted to talk to some of the alumni that went to that school. But everytime I try to reach an alum, I find that it becomes very difficult because I have not attended that school. Is there any open registration website that gives names and specific information about alumni groups of certain universities? Or am I just being a low-rate stalker? Thanks, Evan Smith (the cool guy).

contacting alumni

Hi Evan--

I just went through the entire choosing a grad school & application process(waiting to hear back for Fall 2007!) You definitely want to get in touch with professors, alumni or even current masters/doctoral students would be helpful to see if a program is a good fit for what you want to achieve at grad school. I started getting in touch with different professors in the programs/departments I was considering to research the school & to be see if any research projects sounded like something I'd be interested in.(some schools ask you to be specific about what research you plan on doing) All of the professors I emailed were very helpful and also forwarded me the email address of an alumni or current masters/doctoral student to also get in touch with. So, what I did was take it one potential school at a time & fish through the website, picking different people to get in touch with--this also helps when you are applying because if you've been in touch with someone involved with the admissions process, they may recognize your name & that could set you apart from the other applications.

hope this helps & good luck!
