Massachusetts City Collects Smart Growth Incentives

Approving high density, smart growth developments has brought urbanity and monetary benefits to the town of Easton, Massachusetts.

Easton may soon appreciate firsthand just how lucrative the state's so-called smart growth development law can be."

"The town will net more than $1 million in one-time incentive payments from the state, not to mention about $520,000 yearly in property taxes, if plans for a development at the intersection of routes 123 and 138 win approval."

"The incentive money comes with no strings attached in a year when the town, largely a bedroom community, had to approve a sizable tax increase to keep daily operations afloat."
