We present a summary of the National Conference on Disaster Planning for the Carless Society, an event held recently to examine the planning issues facing people without access to cars. The event placed a special emphasis on discussing the importance and the complexities of providing effective evacuation plans and implementation strategies for the carless in our society.

Presenting this summary is event chairperson John Renne, PhD, assistant professor and associate director at the University of New Orleans Transportation Center. The conference was held February 8-9 in New Orleans.

Videos and slide shows of all conference presentations will be available on the National Conference on Disaster Planning for the Carless Society website.

Sponsors for this event include the American Association of Retired Persons, the Community Transportation Association of America, Transportation Research Board, Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech, the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials, the Federal Transit Administration, and Planetizen.
