Known for its muscle men and rollerbladers in bikinis, Venice may be Southern California's most distinctive neighborhood but new wealth and rising real estate prices is threatening L.A. beachfront Bohemia.
"In the 1960s, Venice was home to a generation of avant-garde artists like Ed Moses and Robert Irwin. Now residents say loft space is increasingly devoted to flush Internet and production companies operated by a new "hipoisie" hip bourgeoisie that revels in the counterculture cachet of the Venice name while pursuing lucrative pursuits such as directing commercials. "
