Workshop Guides Planning For Spokane's University District

3 February 2007 - 9:00am

Last year the City of Spokane was awarded one of four Smart Growth Implementation Assistance awards from the EPA. As a result, a three-day workshop focusing on the city's emerging university district involved the public in shaping the area.

"Over three long days, the consultants met with city and university officials, stakeholders and the public. They walked the neighborhood, spent long hours drawing and coloring maps and overlays, and poked through the district's strategic master plan — drafted by city leadership with community input in 2004."

"The key, they say, is to plan. To draw. To chart out exactly how to turn goals into realities. Each consultant stressed the need to start building the kind of infrastructure that would attract smart development."

And many of us – the majority, in fact – find ourselves living in a drive-only landscape, where we must burn gas even to reach a transit stop, if one exists.
