Maui's Planning Director Profiled

19 January 2007 - 1:00pm

The Planning Director for Maui, Hawaii, Jeff Hunt, prepares to take on a new general plan process. He was formerly the director of community development in the Rocky Mountain resort town of Breckenridge, Colorado.

"While Maui and Breckenridge are both resort destinations, Hunt will see some differences on the job. Maui’s population of more than 125,000 will give Hunt a much bigger working environment. Breckenridge is home to just 3,300 permanent residents and a peak winter population of 35,000.

...'In Breckenridge there was more consensus that development, if managed properly, brings benefits to the community,' he said. 'I don't always feel that consensus on Maui.'

...'I'm going to take a variation on the Serenity Prayer,' he said. 'Try to fix the things I can, accept the things I can’t, and hope the citizens recognize the difference.' "

The circumstances that many localities and planning departments are suffering in the current economic winter will no doubt generate stress on administrations and service levels. The economy, combined with the housing bubble, has dealt a double blow to local budgets and revenue streams.
