We present the first part of a three-part series of discussions about urban renewal with architect and planner Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk. In the first installment, Plater-Zyberk discusses Miami 21, the comprehensive planning project her firm Duany Plater-Zyberk and Company is currently developing for the city of Miami.

In the forthcoming second and third parts of this series, Plater-Zyberk discusses other issues related to urban renewal and transformation including the importance of political leadership and public input in urban design, the experience of planning in smaller towns, and the role of the next generation of planners, architects and designers in creating livable cities.

This interview was conducted in July 2006 by Planetizen Correspondent Mike Lydon, a graduate student in urban planning at the University of Michigan who spent the summer interning at DPZ and Company.
