U.S. Fish and Wildlife declares 513,000 acres in Southern California as critical habitat for California songbird.
A tiny gray bird known for fiercely defending itsscrub-brush territory received heightened federalprotection on 513,650 acres in Southern California on Tuesday, an area considered too big by developers and too small by environmental activists.The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's decision to declare "critical habitat" for the California gnatcatcher,ends nine months of uncertainty over how much undeveloped land would be protected. But the fighting may not be over yet."
