Bringing The Knowledge Economy To Town

22 November 2006 - 9:00am

The city of Columbia, South Carolina, is crafting an innovative strategy to woo high-tech industries in conjunction with a new downtown research campus.

A group of city and business leaders is crafting a new marketing strategy to "sell" Columbia to the high-tech companies and the workers they will need to compete in the new knowledge economy.

The group is considering "establishing a "closing fund" -- a pot of money used to cover incentives to offset offers made by other cities vying for the same technology companies as Columbia" and "working with the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, University of South Carolina and others to attract knowledge-economy conventions to Columbia."

"Part of the challenge is attracting not only the companies but also the well-educated professionals, known as 'knowledge workers,' who would comprise their work force."

Great news, and LONG overdue.

I don't understand why city leaders have waited so long to craft such a plan. This is LONG overdue. Coble and city staff need to get some fire under their asses and WAKE UP!
