Planners Debate Boston's Big Dig

Boston's massive Big Dig project -- considered the most expensive highway project in the nation -- will bury Interstate 93 under downtown Boston and "leave a 30-acre swath of open land cutting through the heart of the city"heart of the city."

"Officially known as the Central Artery/Tunnel Project -- which will bury Interstate 93 beneathdowntown Boston -- the Big Dig will leave a 30-acre swath of open land cutting through theheart of the city when its completed in 2004."75 percent of the open land will be kept as open space while 25 percent will be for commercial development. Planners are debating what to put on top of the open land. Critics warn that too much emphasis on open space may create problems.
