Parking Versus Pedestrians

7 November 2006 - 12:00pm

An amendment to make Honolulu a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly city is threatened because of a proposed decrease in on-street parking spaces.

As many cities across the Country grapple with a total lack of pedestrian/bicycle infrastructure, the City of Honolulu is abundant with such facilities. In an effort to ensure the City continues to provide for bicyclists and pedestrians, citizens will vote Tuesday on an amendment to the City Charter that prioritizes pedestrian and bike improvements.

However, a recent local op-ed blasts the proposal, saying "Good planning demands that amenities like bike lanes and increased pedestrian access be incorporated on a case by case basis and never at the expense of on-street public parking for motorists."
